Abstract

Mammea suriga is a familiar endemic medicinal plant belonging to the family Guttiferae/Clusiaceae, grows abundantly in the Western Ghats of India. The present investigation focuses on studying the phytoconstituents as well as antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of bark and leaf extracts. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of carbohydrates, phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, terpenoids, triterpenoids, steroids and saponins. The carbohydrate contents were highest in leaf methanol (140.90 ± 1.19 mg/g), phenolic contents highest in leaf methanol (154.32 ± 1.80 mg/g), the highest flavonoid content were observed in bark aqueous extract (437.3878 ± 0.09mg/g). In the antioxidant screening assay, the highest inhibition concentration was found to be IC50 (53.33 ± 0.13) for leaf methanol for DPPH, highest ferric reducing activity was observed in both the bark extracts at 300μg/mL concentrations, antioxidant activity for phoshomolybdenum assay was observed highest (75%) in leaf methanol extract at 300μg/mL. Antibacterial activity was carried out by agar well diffusion method using extracts against E. coli, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus which showed inhibition zone diameter ranging from 12-22mm. Antifungal test by poison bait method against Fusarium solani and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides have shown good results.
