Abstract
This study delves into the intricate effects of culture shock on the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) acquisition among tertiary students in Indonesia. Culture shock, a multifaceted phenomenon involving emotional, psychological, and cognitive reactions, poses challenges during the adjustment to a new cultural milieu. Specifically examining its adverse impacts on EFL learners, this research highlights psychological distress, adaptation hurdles, and obstacles encountered by English Language Learners (ELLs). Discoveries underscore the profound psychological influence of culture shock, inducing sentiments of perplexity, anxiety, and unease. Essential strategies identified for mitigating these challenges encompass comprehensive preparation, embracing cultural disparities, and fostering a positive mindset. Moreover, the study underscores the pivotal role of pre-arrival training initiatives in empowering students to navigate the intricacies of a novel cultural setting. For EFL learners, cultural adaptation and pre-arrival readiness emerge as critical facets. Integrating cultural awareness into language instruction not only enhances linguistic proficiency but also nurtures essential cultural competencies. Challenges faced by ELLs, such as homesickness and communication barriers, are effectively addressed through the implementation of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) techniques and culturally responsive pedagogy. This investigation furnishes practical insights and recommendations tailored for educators, institutions, and policymakers to bolster support mechanisms for EFL students undergoing cultural transitions. By embracing a comprehensive approach that acknowledges emotional, social, and academic dimensions, stakeholders can foster the well-being and academic achievements of students navigating the complexities of culture shock.
