Objectives: Antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity was studied in methanolic extract of Helicteresisora L. by using DPPH radical scavenging assay, ferric reducing power assay, phosphomolybdneum reduction assay and well diffusion assay methods.
Methods: 50g of H. isora fruits were collected near siddha medical shop. The fruits were grounded with mortar and pestle were soaked in methanol for 72 hours and extracted and used for further analysis.
Results: Fecl3 of H. isora fruit was analysed and it seems to be the fruit has Fe3+ activity. IC50 value was attained at the concentration of 40 μg/ml. Phosphomolybdenum was reduced to molybdate and the reduction was read at 695nm. IC50 value was attained at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. Methanolic extract of H. isora was analysed against 6 test pathogens. It possesses antibacterial activity and minimum zone of inhibition observed in 250µg/ml. maximum zone of inhibition 500 µg/ml.
Conclusion: Result of DPPH, Fe3+ reducing power, phosphomolybdenum assay shown it has antioxidant activity. Antibacterial activity of Helicteres Isora fruit against test pathogens indicates it can inhibit the growth of Gram positive and Gram-negative organism.
