Abstract

The objective of this study was to report a case of mammary fibroadenoma in a female cat treated at a veterinary clinic in the city of Santarém, Pará. A seven-month-old feline, not defined breed, weighing 3 kg, uncastrated, with increased volume in the lower quadrant of the mammary gland was seen at the veterinary clinic. The owner reported that the animal used contraception about four weeks ago, and noticed breast enlargement a week ago, but did not notice apathy or lack of appetite. On clinical examination, the patient had normal-colored mucous membranes, rectal temperature 38.7°C, heart rate and respiratory rate without changes, rigid mammary glands and well-defined palpation. The owner opted for partial mastectomy only in the affected breast pairs. Histopathological findings were compatible with feline mammary fibroadenoma, with free margins and free lymph node. This study was the first to report a case of mammary fibroadenoma, diagnosed by histopathology in feline, in Santarém city, western mesoregion of Pará, Brazil. Although the occurrence of this pathology generally has a benign character, it can eventually lead to death, in case the diagnosis, as well as treatment, are not performed in advance. Especially in not neutered animals that have been treated with contraceptives derived from synthetic progestins.
