Assessment of Albumin Status in Hypertensive Patients with or Without Cataract in Nigeria

This study looked at albumin levels in hypertensive patients with and without cataracts at the Eye Foundation Hospital in Itamogiri, Ijebu – Mushin in the Ijebu-East Local Government Area and the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, Nigeria. The 150 samples from the research area were chosen using simple random sampling. The findings showed that there was no significant difference in albumin level between the control group (Mean±SD=48.12±8.20g/L) as compared with test group A (Mean±SD = 49.19±10.19g/L) but in comparing albumin levels in the control group and test group B, the findings showed that there was a significant reduction in albumin concentration in test group B with Mean±SD = 44.35±11.99g/L indicating hypertension (with cataract) had significantly decreased levels of plasma albumin when compared to non-cataract hypertensive patients. This suggests that cataracts may have a direct impact on hypertension individuals' serum albumin content. After analyzing serum electrolyte levels, such individuals should be recommended to follow a salt-restricted diet, which may help to slow the maturation and advancement of cataracts.
